An expressionist piece reflecting the depth and varied iterations of jazz influences. This piece intertwines the complex elements present through the evolution of jazz-birth in the context of the country that serves both as mother and master. The tension, push and pull of ambivalence is revealed as cynical beauty on display. As one discovers the deeper meaning of various symbols, it becomes glaringly obvious that such deep and soul stirring manifestation is not possible without the contradiction the art form wears with shame, resentment and pride. Who else could celebrate its oppression in such a way that the world may want to look away in embarrassed shame because of its contribution but is caught in an undeniable hypnotic gaze and inevitable celebration. Jazz created - jazz redeems - jazz is triumphant… JAZZ IN AMERICA.
The flag - reflected capitalism. Its colors are created from bloodshed. That bloodshed is African American pain.
The player - black through and through has form but is formless. His creativity and resilience is shown by turning blood (pain) that, once filtered through his strong, survivor spirit, transforms into beautiful music that emanates from his instrument.
The Greek phrase - Onua Delta Theta is the language of the NEW testament, which is based on the redemptive, cleansing, covenant sealing blood of The Christ. It translates as: Those with ears to hear, let them hear.
The hearts - they have EARS which says to listen (to jazz) with one’s heart more than one’s head. It’s a ‘feeling’ music.
The fleur de lis - In the lower left-hand corner the symbol ubiquitous in New Orleans 0 the birthplace of Jazz
The animal - top cent is… a dog. He is wearing a mask because he is a superhero. His name is Underdog.
The letters - top center is a cryptic collection of letters that appears as symbols. If one follows it carefully, they will see MINGUS, a prominent West Coast jazz musician and composer from the 60’s on. One of his most famous compositions is titled, “Beneath the Underdog.” See it?
The hieroglyph - lower right-hand is the symbol for TRUTH. Jazz is the truth that Africans expressed from a source that existed before America.
