I grew up in Southwest Georgia in the 1960’s.. where the news from Selma was local news.. reporters and photojournalists from the Columbus Ledger~ Enquirer wrote and documented the events. I remember marches to desegregate the local Public Library and integrate the schools.
This painting was done on one of my Summer trips South.. when I lived in Pennsylvania. I’d go home and from there branch out and visit historic sites. I painted this on the sidewalk along the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma.. people would walk across the bridge.. and stop and watch.. one guy reminded me of images from the 60’s marches.. in his short sleeve white shirt he reminded me of Dr. King.. so I put him in my painting.
