“The End of Innocence" captures two little girls at a BLM rally. It was painted from a black and white photograph, and inspired by all of my Black friends who have had to have “the talk” with their children about what to do when confronted by law enforcement. It struck me as another example of White Privilege that my parents never had to have that talk with my brother or myself (though we did have many talks about the Holocaust, and I knew the history of my grandparents and their families escaping the Russian pogroms in the late 19th/early 20th century). It is only through these continual reminders that we remain vigilant to oppression and racism though the cost is a loss of innocence in childhood. Art provides a venue toward displaying those essential reminders.
