This triptych was painted during the Black Lives Matter protests. It captures the feelings of anger and pain that so many of us experienced watching the horrible deaths of Black people at the hands of many authorities. But the protests and ensuing public outcry brought many people, as well as myself, some hope.
This triptych is of Lawrence (64), who was born in Mississippi. Lawrence is very proud of having been a Private-First-Class in the Marines. While in the Marines he got married and had a child. He was honorably discharged after six years.
Lawrence was gainfully employed as a janitor at a local college, but he was laid off. He feels frustrated and angry over not being able to find work, not receiving Veteran services and not being able to make a better life for himself. Recently Lawrence has suffered being mugged and had his identification, money, and belongings stolen, and been arrested for what he describes as “crimes of being homeless.”
