Rosalind Woods

Rosalind WoodsHer mother knew that she had a special gift for art even at five years old in Key West, Florida. While the other children were drawing images from their environment, Rosalind was able to see far beyond the shores of Key West, into worlds that she had only read about and bring them to life through her art.

Coming of age in the 1960’s, Rosalind’s parents encouraged her to pursue a safer career choice, so she followed in the footsteps of her father and became an educator.  She created opportunities to share the principles of art and design with her students, for more than 25 years with LAUSD, as she continued painting in her free time. As an entrepreneur, Rosalind launched a successful children’s clothing line in the Beverly Hills area called “Uncle Pop”, created a line of soy candles, designed aprons and table runners, sold real estate for more than 15 years and holds two US Patents.

Just recently, one of Rosalind's paintings called "A New Day", was selected as a winner in the Elysian Valley Arts Collective Frogtown Artwalk, where she received a cash prize.  The juried panel had this to say about Rosalind's painting:  "This piece is a pretty sophisticated work of design and abstraction.  The more we looked at it, the more we began to see buildings, streets and neighborhoods.  It is very comfortable being a purely non-objective abstract painting.

Her newest creations, primarily acrylic paint on canvas and mixed media,  explore the beauty and complexities of life through her lens as a 74 year old African American woman with a rich mosaic of life experiences. Through abstraction and strong lines that stand tall, cylinders, shapes, motion, colors that reflect life, energy and passion, Roz challenges us to see and feel her art and take a step inside her world.

It is our hope that each of you will experience a painting or two that resonates with you. Consider all the spaces in your home or office that could use a new meaningful piece of art to breathe new life into the room or space.  Your support of a local Independent African-American Artist creating original works of art right here in our Mid-City community, means that Roz will be able to continue creating new amazing pieces to share with the world and someday open a studio in our community.
