The painting simply titled ‘Sunflowers & Clouds’ came from the artist’s expression of joy. Daughter of artist Andre Ellis, is rooted in taking ownership of their own narrative. Raised in the famously known Afrocentric Leimert Park area in Los Angeles, Nya & her father like to create what brings them joy and what reflects African American history.
So when Nya Simone was asked by her art teacher what would she like to paint, she said she wanted to make a 'happy painting.' “Sunflowers are happy,” she remarked. “I want to paint sunflowers.” This helps us to remember that inspiration can come from the depths of complex thought and challenging experiences or in this case, a quick inventory of one’s mood and lightness of heart. Yes, Sunflowers!
